Kathryn Gretsinger is an Instructor at the University of British Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. Kathryn is the lead national audio trainer with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Radio. She just completed the design and delivery of an online learning tool to support staff in their skills development. Also, in 2012 she led an initiative to provide Journalism 101 training to Inuit and Cree staff at with the public broadcaster’s Northern Service.
Kathryn’s specialty is audio storytelling, but she works with journalists across media lines to develop their journalistic skills. Her work involves incorporating story development, production, interviewing, performance and journalism ethics.
At UBC, Kathryn works with a small team to lead UBC’s Integrated Journalism course (Integrated Journalism and Journalism Standards and Practices) She also runs the School’s Internship program. The SOJ requires students to complete 12 non-credit internship weeks in order to complete the requirements of the program. Her job involves supporting students to arrange, prepare for and complete their professional practice internships. Kathryn’s special interests include mental health, HIV/Aids, social justice, Aboriginal issues, journalism ethics, digital media and education.
