Job opening: Research Manager, Academic journalism project

Position: Research Manager
Hours: 14 hours per week (two days)
Salary: $2,310/month
Duration: From appointment to March 31 2016

The research manager will work on a SSHRC-funded project entitled Mobilizing academic journalism for societal dialogue and knowledge, led by professors Alfred Hermida and Mary Lynn Young. The aim of the project is to help surface the wealth of academic expertise that is hidden from public view through the creation of a new independent channel of premium information, analysis and commentary direct from researchers and academics to the Canadian public in partnership with The Conversation Media Group.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Performing research and analysis on existing knowledge mobilization initiatives at universities in Canada
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of an online academic journalism project
  • Commissioning and working with expert contributors to create consistent, high‑impact knowledge-based material for digital media
  • Managing Graduate Research Assistants in story selection, copy editing and headline writing
  • Working with principal researchers to identify and explore funding opportunities
  • Developing and supporting grant proposals

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Substantial experience of editorial leadership on a national or international news website (preferably three years or more)
  • Significant digital journalism experience, with expert news judgement
  • Strong analytical skills and a proven ability to juggle multiple stories
  • Experience in working with expert contributors to create content that informs and engages the wider public
  • A proven commitment to enrich public debate through evidence-based analysis and commentary
  • Understanding of audience engagement through social platforms to support and facilitate great journalism

The ideal candidate would combine the skills, experience and mindset of a journalist and scholarly researcher.
